A Back Patio That Became an Outdoor Kitchen Built for Florida

Custom outdoor kitchen in Clearwater with granite countertop and drop-in grill

Project Info

Clearwater clients wanted a proper outdoor kitchen on the patio they already had. The hard part was building something that survives a Florida summer.

The problem

The clients wanted a high-end outdoor kitchen on their existing back patio, not a grill on a cart. That raises two questions most people do not think about until they are in the middle of it. The first is code. An outdoor kitchen means gas, electrical, and egress clearances, and all of it has to be done properly or it fails inspection and becomes a hazard. The second is materials. Florida sun and humidity go through outdoor materials faster than almost anywhere, and a build that looks good on day one can be visibly degrading within two seasons. They wanted something that would still look right in five years.

Scope of work

The island was framed in pressure-treated wood, anchored to the existing exterior slab. We finished the unexposed sides in Hardie board and tiled every visible face, then built in multiple storage shelves and fitted stainless steel exterior doors. For power, we ran underground electrical conduit from an existing outlet, terminating in two GFCIs and two dedicated outlets to serve the grill, the rotisserie burner, and the integrated lighting. Every egress opening was verified against the 36-inch code swing clearance. The island is topped with a 120-inch granite countertop and a drop-in grill.

Result

An outdoor kitchen on the existing patio, built with materials chosen for Florida rather than for the showroom.

Why granite and not quartz

We recommend granite over quartz for every exterior countertop we build, and this one is no exception. Quartz is engineered stone, and the resin binding it does not hold up to sustained UV the way natural stone does. In Florida heat and humidity, that shows up as fading and surface breakdown over time. Granite is more expensive to fabricate in a run this long, but it is the material that is still there and still looking right in ten years. On an outdoor build, that is the only measure worth using.

An outdoor kitchen is only as good as the materials under it. Talk to us about your patio.
